Since last April 10, a significant change has come to all Spanish municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants; the obligation to introduce a fee for waste management. This measure is not an isolated innovation, but a direct response to European Union requirements and a key element in the continent's sustainability strategy.

Alignment with Europe: The Waste Directive

This new fee, included in the Law 7/2022seeks to align Spain with the objectives of the European Union on waste management. In particular, it is based on the Directive (EU) 2018/851amending the Directive 2008/98/ECon Waste (hereinafter referred to as the "Amended Waste Directive"). This regulation establishes clear and mandatory goals for all member states, such as:

  • Reuse or recycle at least 55% of municipal waste by 2025.
  • Increase this figure to 65% by 2035.

 

The implementation of these fees seeks to encourage waste reduction and promote the circular economy, making waste management more efficient and sustainable.
