Ready for the new waste charge? What every municipality in Spain needs to know

Since 10 April, a significant change has reached every Spanish municipality with more than 5,000 inhabitants: the obligation to introduce a charge for waste management. This measure is not an isolated novelty but a direct response to European Union requirements and a key piece in the continent's sustainability strategy.

Alignment with Europe: the Waste Directive

This new charge, set out in Law 7/2022, seeks to align Spain with the European Union's objectives on waste management. In particular, it is grounded in Directive (EU) 2018/851, amending Directive 2008/98/EC on waste (hereinafter the "amended Waste Directive"). That legislation sets clear, binding targets for every member state, such as:

• Reusing or recycling at least 55% of municipal waste by 2025.
• Raising that figure to 65% by 2035.

Implementing these charges aims to encourage waste reduction and promote the circular economy, making waste management more efficient and sustainable.
