Promoambiental Distrito cements its leadership in circular economy with Zero Waste certification

On 21 January, Promoambiental Distrito set a milestone in environmental management within the public waste-collection sector by receiving Gold category Zero Waste Management System Certification, awarded by ICONTEC. With this achievement, the company becomes one of the pioneering organisations in Bogotá's public waste-collection sector to reach this recognition, establishing itself as a city-wide benchmark in sustainability and circular economy.

This certification validates the implementation of an integral circular economy model, focused on strengthening the management of the waste generated internally at its operations base. Through strategies of reduced resource consumption, material reuse, separation at source and responsible waste management, Promoambiental Distrito shows that sustainability, when built strategically into the operation, produces real, measurable and verifiable results.

A year of continuous work with tangible impacts

The process of implementing and certifying the Zero Waste Management System took a year of steady work, thanks to the coordination of the organisation's administrative and operational processes under the leadership of the General Management. As a result of that collective effort, over the course of 2025 Promoambiental Distrito managed to:

  • Avoid the generation of 187,000 kilograms of waste.
  • Reach 84% real recycling, aligned with its daily operation.

The external audit carried out by ICONTEC, in its role as Conformity Assessment Body, confirmed the rigour, coherence and transparency of the process, establishing the organisation as a benchmark in sustainable management within Bogotá's waste-collection sector.

Internal leadership driving the transformation

This achievement was possible thanks to the commitment and leadership of an interdisciplinary team that made adopting the Zero Waste Management System a strategic priority:

  • Tomás Mendoza – General Manager: led the implementation of the system strategically, providing direction, institutional backing and the key decisions that consolidated the process.
  • Ángela Mendoza – Management System Director: coordinated the integration of the Zero Waste Management System with the existing systems, ensuring its alignment with corporate standards.
  • Ana Muñoz – Environmental Improvement Specialist: led the implementation of the system technically, defining guidelines and indicators and supporting the different areas to turn it into an operational, certifiable reality.
  • Lorena Pineda – Environmental Analyst: supported process standardisation, indicator tracking and work with the teams involved in environmental management.
  • Edgar Cataño – Sustainability Manager: directed the Corporate Sustainability Plan, aligning the Zero Waste Management System with the corporate strategy and circular economy principles.
  • Valeria NiñoCommunications: led the internal communication strategy so that the waste reduction and responsible consumption initiatives reached every member of staff, turning the pursuit of certification into a shared purpose.

The support of Global Zero Waste

At Global Zero Waste we celebrate this important achievement and highlight Promoambiental Distrito's firm commitment to transforming its practices towards a more circular and responsible management model. At the official handover, our organisation was represented by Diego Romero, Technical Director, and Alberto Díaz, Certification Director, who also took part in the technical support the Global Zero Waste team provided throughout the process.

This recognition reaffirms that collaboration between organisations, technical teams and committed leadership is a key factor in accelerating the transition towards management models that are increasingly sustainable and aligned with circular economy principles.

An example that strengthens sector leadership

Zero Waste Certification at Promoambiental Distrito promotes the leadership of the public waste-collection sector in adopting circular economy models and responsible waste management.

This recognition shows that, where there is solid institutional coordination, constant technical commitment and a long-term strategic vision, it is possible to generate real, measurable and sustainable environmental impacts for the city.

At Global Zero Waste we extend our sincerest congratulations to the Management, to the technical and operational teams, and to everyone who made this achievement possible. Their work not only strengthens the organisation's internal management, it also inspires other bodies to believe, act and move towards a circular economy model built into daily operations.

This milestone reaffirms that responsible waste management is a key pillar in building more sustainable cities.
