ALO Sur: pioneer in road sustainability with Gold Zero Waste certification

The ALO Sur Concession, an emblematic infrastructure project transforming connectivity and mobility in the south and west of Bogotá, has set a milestone not only in road engineering but also in sustainable waste management.

At Global Zero Waste, we are proud to celebrate that ALO Sur has been certified in the Gold category of the Zero Waste Management System, a recognition awarded by ICONTEC with the technical backing of Global Zero Waste. This achievement establishes ALO Sur as the first road concession in the world to reach this level of excellence in sustainability under a Zero Waste approach.

What is ALO Sur? A project with social, economic and environmental impact

The ALO Sur S.A.S. Concession leads the development, operation and maintenance of the Avenida Longitudinal de Occidente – South Section (ALO Sur) project, a concessioned road corridor designed to improve mobility between Chusacá (Sibaté) and Calle 13 in Bogotá.

The project covers works on more than 24.5 kilometres of road, integrating functional units of construction, rehabilitation and operation, as well as bridges, cycle lanes, public spaces and more efficient traffic systems, benefiting millions of people in the region.

ALO Sur stands out for an integral vision, in which modern engineering is combined with practices of social responsibility, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, generating positive impacts on mobility, road safety and the quality of life of communities.

A recognition that crosses borders: Gold Zero Waste Certification

The Zero Waste Management System Certification in the Gold category is a high-level distinction that validates the effective integration of circular economy principles into ALO Sur's waste management.

This process runs under the International Standard for Zero Waste Management Systems, intellectual property of Global Zero Waste, which drives the continuous improvement of material flows through the strategic adoption of the 9Rs: refuse, rethink/redesign, reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, recover parts and recycle.

Thanks to this integral management, ALO Sur demonstrates not only regulatory compliance but also measurable results, reflecting a real commitment to efficiency in the use of resources, the minimisation of environmental impacts and the transformation of waste into valuable resources.

Operational and cultural transformation: from waste to resources

Implementing the Zero Waste model at ALO Sur involved a deep process of operational and cultural transformation. The technical and operational teams restructured processes, strengthened capabilities and adopted practices geared towards the efficient recovery of waste.

That sustained effort has made it possible to progress consistently on key indicators, consolidating management aligned with today's circularity challenges and showing that sustainability is built through daily operations.

Institutional leadership and technical rigour

The official handover of the certification was attended by Global Zero Waste, represented by its Technical Director, Diego Romero, and its Certification Director, Alberto Díaz, who accompanied the process and reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to technical rigour and to generating real impact.

Representatives of ICONTEC also took part, among them Claudia Pérez, Central Region Commercial Director, and Juan Navarrete, Account Executive — a body that, in its role as conformity assessment organisation, was key to auditing full compliance with the requirements of the International Standard for the Zero Waste Management System, guaranteeing the rigour and transparency of the standard.
